The First McNabb Report: La Dama en Roja

McNabb Report 0: La Dama en Roja

In 1968 Jim Roth was just returning from foreign assignment with an oil company and beginning with a new company in Bakersfield, California. He had a plain jane white Chevy company car and bought his wife a Mustang, but the car was just not working out. As he was looking through the classified ads he spotted a 1968 Jaguar XKE convertible (serial number J681E18273), a series one and a half, red with black interior. He had always loved these cars but never thought he could afford one. When he went to look at the car the seller was moaning that he had just bought this beautiful car and now his wife was pregnant. Jim did not have to think twice about it and bought the car. He gave his wife the company car and began a lifelong relationship with the Jag.

Jim was a California boy having been raised in the Ventura, Bakersfield and LA area by a father that also worked in the oil industry. Incidentally his father, George, won a gold medal in gymnastics in the 1932 Olympic Games in LA. For those not familiar with the California landscape, Bakersfield is halfway between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the ocean, about a two hour drive either way. Jim commuted the few miles to work each day in the Jag but also took trips to the coast and amazingly enough even put chains on the car, a ski rack on the back and went to the ski slopes!

In 1972 Jim changed to a smaller company in the LA area. Now his commute was a bit longer but included a drive up Coldwater Canyon, a race along Mulholland Drive (ala Steve McQueen and James Dean!) and down Beverly Glen to work each day. The Jag continued to give good service on the daily commute. In the mid-70s Jim bought a house in Malibu near the ocean and continued his commute to LA. Through several smaller companies Jim continued to work in the same area through the mid-80s.

In 1984 Jim was finally transferred to Houston, Texas, which is a bit inevitable in the oil industry. He shipped the Jag to Texas but now began to drive a company car to work and keep the Jag for pleasure driving. He also bought a Catalina 36 sailboat (serial number 39 out of about 30,000 built). In 1987 he was divorced. His new girlfriend made a big impression about a year later. She backed his van out of the driveway and hit the Jag, causing some damage (he married her soon after in spite of this!). Although the car was still in good shape his mechanic suggested a complete restoration. Jim’s company was sold and he received a pay out. He figured maybe the time was right but he decided to manage the project himself. He commissioned the mechanic to do the motor, a painter for the body and paint and another gentleman for the interior. It took most of 1988 but the results were spectacular.

In 1989 Jim finally started his own company and began spending a lot of time cruising in the Jag, going to some shows and competitions, and sailing. It was about this time that I met him as he really needed a regional map of Latin America for some presentations. I work in the oil data business and allowed him to borrow a map. Our meeting would have been brief except for the fact that he had a die cast of an XKE on his desk. That started a conversation that lead to a friendship. In 1990 there was a hurricane that damaged the sailboat and it was restored as well at that time. About this time his wife was diagnosed with cancer. With the success of his own company he decided it was time to go home. In 1993 he shipped the sailboat to Ventura harbor and his wife lived on the boat and commuted across the harbor each day to supervise the building of their dream house in Ventura Keys. The next year with the house finished he shipped the Jag back to California after a 10 year stint in Texas. Unfortunately his wife died in 1998. In 2005 he completely restored his sailboat.

We now find the Jag back home in California, looking and driving as good as new, and always ready for a spin up Highway One along the coast. Jim comments that the only thing more challenging than owning a vintage car is owning a vintage sailboat as well. I have heard a few people ask from time to time how it was that Jim never sold the car to buy a more modern sports car. Jim said the answer was simple, his two sons would kill him if he ever sold it. I think this car is going to stay in the family for a long time. And so the relationship continues after 42 years with the Lady in Red!

THE TENTH LIFE of A JAGUAR E-TYPE Part III

PART I,.... PART II

1963 JAGUAR V8 XKE 5 SPEED ROADSTER BLOG UPDATE by Mack Besser ZZAAPP Vintage Auto. September 22, 2011Summer has passed without a drive. Other “summer cars” took precedence; and several folks are now on the road in vintage sports cars! The Edelbrock bolt on fuel injection kit had a perplexing issue with fuel starvation past idle. The new kit’s fuel pump had failed to deliver past start-up & idle. Placement of the pump (FYI), was not below the fuel tankcausing it to overload. Another item to correct (as were many from it’s arrival). I wonder why????After a prescribed “period of consternation” the pump was relocated, to just above the right side mount of the rear sway bar. Looks factory. Justin did a great job rearranging the inlet & outlet fuel piping. Well, it started before, it should start now. It does-and on the first day of fall-we take the E-V8 out for it’s initial foray. First let me say, we are located on a farm, 200 yds. of (go very slow) gravel road-then the nice 2 lane paved county road. No traffic for miles, unless tractors & combines count. The first 1.5 miles, we took very slowly, making sure all 5 gears worked, the 4 pot alloy calipers, boosters, etc. were doing their job. All seemed well. We did run the car up to 4500 RPM’S in 1, 2 & 3, likely exceeding the speed limit by 100%! 4th and 5th were a coast purely for safety reasons. Brakes were excellent; I had never driven a BRAND NEW Tremic 5 speed-now I know why the Mustang guys like ‘em! What’s not to like! Much left to do-in reality-a proper exhaust, new seat belts, water temp gauge correction, bigger rear tires (!), front suspension alignment. Oh yeah, then we have to put in the windshield & interior trim bits. LOTS O’ POWER-from 2500 RPM’S on up. Good move on the owner’s part to maintain originality in all aspects of appearance. A bit of the real tricky business was the shift console relocation and tunnel console alterations; all the while adhering to unobtrusive modifications. FYI, you folks with those old E 2+2s, especially the V12 cars, this would be a good swap. Using a Holley carb would save you about $2800 and a lotof plumbing work. Ford 302 V8’s are cheap, not so the Tremic. However, you could actually enjoy an E 2+2. They are very inexpensive & usually broken. 2 good reasons to make the purchase & proceed with this type of project. Remember, the V12 cars already have decent brakes, and a slightly wider engine bay, making a header fit easier.

Will only bore the readers with a few lines with regards to the complete bell housing, trans & driveshaft tunnel fabrication. We used factory parts, adapting to fit, and strengthened the main cross member that someone had cut to clear the Muncie linkage. The trans tunnel was made 2” wider & 4” longer by some clever shaping on the English Wheel, it’s basis was an original piece. We’ve included a picture of the monster tunnelthe car arrived with for comparison. Held on with 6 sheet metal screws. I wonder why??

Jaguar at All Britshish Car show

Award
First time out and got 3rd Place in Modified British Class.

Boot
Got the boot lid at 6 PM the night before. If I had not gotten it, I would not have made the show.  Installed the license plate, still have to install the reverse and plate light.

Show wheels
I had taken off the go wheels, and installed the show wheels in anticipation of getting the boot lid installed.

Mead Garden
Some of the other cars starting to show up for the show. I got there fairly early.

Spot the air filter.
Some people wondered why it was in the British modified class, while others spotted the K&N air filter an surmised there were some modifications that disqualified her from being with her sister XK's.

Competition.
Some of the other cars in she was competing with. I never did open the bonnet. Still a bit of a mess under there. Need to do a lot of clean up.

Shade
 Everyone loved the colour/paint job.

Venue
Very nice venue for a car show. Beautiful weather, could not ask for a better day.

Another award!

THE STORY of JAGUAR E-TYPE GATTINO ROSSO (Part II)

To read Part I CLICK HERE.

So in my experience, don't assume that the purchase / pick-up / delivery of your dream car will be a romp. Let your passions help you persevere…

The E-type was waiting for me --well, us, since my fiance Carol agreed to join me (bless her). It took a while to rent a trailer, finally from Unlucky U, for the next weekend. Rented a truck from another, actually competent company. Drove it to UU and the guy shook his head. "Can't have the boss see me hooking our trailer to a competitor's truck." Gimme a break. His solution (!?) was to tape over the name on the door.

Then at the last minute, he wouldn't rent the trailer. "The previous guy lost a ramp on the freeway and it caused a big problem". (Not my problem, pal.) I finally convinced him to rent it. They bolted the huge orange steel ramps in place, and off we went with tape flapping on the doors. It was a long drive down I-5 to Long Beach, with lots of creaks and rattles and clunks to spice up the day and nothing but static on the radio. We got to Mark's parents' place and I took a walk around to make sure everything was fine. It wasn't. One ramp was missing.

I figure there's a 2001-style orange monolith stuck firmly upright in someone's front yard south of Gilroy, the subject of considerable local speculation as to which planet it came from or what religion it represents.

The car looked pretty good, pretty much intact along with a few coffee cans of parts, cam covers in a box, manifold roped in place, a grease-stained copy of Haynes and the original Jag manual. I thought it was cool but Carol was pretty quiet -- wondering why I had gone to so much trouble for a non-running very pale Primrose British coupe that smelled odd. I wrote Mark the check, for a rather small amount (and which pays dividends to this day in low DMV fees) and then confronted the Big Issue: how do we get it on the one-legged trailer?

I did my best diagonal back-up job, putting the wheels in the ditch and the end of the trailer near the hump of the driveway. Mark grabbed his group of high school kids (going on a hike later) and found an old wooden beam in the back of the garage. Along with several other bits and implements, we all wrestled the old girl up the ramp -- gingerly -- and got her centered and eventually strapped down. We had some lunch and joked nervously about the drive and headed north into a major headwind. It was all pretty surreal and I'm glad I didn't know at the time it wouldn't actually move under its own power for 24 years...

THE STORY of JAGUAR E-TYPE GATTINO ROSSO (Part I)

HOW IT ALL STARTED
You're all familiar with how this obsession begins. I was captivated by the few E-types I saw many years ago, and a cool guy my sister's age had a Series III coupe. I didn't get the bug bad, though, until I had my first (and only!) ride in a Series I roadster, on the night of our high school senior prom. Hard to believe my classmate's dad let him drive it, but... wow. I was hooked.
Several years later, in college, I was scanning for a nice driver's car. Some of the Healeys were sketchy, the Minis were hiding some structural problems, the Jags of any quality were too much money, and although I found a 250 GTE Ferrari for $13K, I suspected I'd end up spending that much just to keep it alive. (Yeah, some years later people spent up to $80K to use them as donors for GTO replicas. Oh well. D-types were $10K way back when too.)
My roommate had a nice MG-TC he had restored and I did my best to not grind the gears when he let me drive it. Still... not quite what I was dreaming of. Then he let on, some months later, that he had another car... Stored down in L.A. at his parents' house, awaiting a valve job, was a 1966 Series 1 E-type coupe. Whoa. A 4.2, known to be more of a driver's car than the 3.8 (mainly due to the old Moss box and the seats, plus brakes and cooling, or lack of).
He was still not sure about letting it go, but being in business school and with his fiance pushing him to simplify, plus repeated entreaties by Yours Truly, he finally OK'd the sale. I just had to go down to check it out, and if it looked OK, write him a check and take it home. No problem. (Stay tuned. for Part II)

THE TENTH LIFE of A JAGUAR E-TYPE Part II

BY MACK BESSER of ZZAAPP VINTAGE AUTO
For Part I of this article CLICK HERE
.
Winter time in northwestern Illinois means snow, cold, snow, cold & if it thaws a bit, mud! Then more snow & cold! Obviously, not a time to take the E-V8 out for a test spin.
We have the project to a “turn-key” & charging level, upgraded brakes bled, cooling system adaptations completed-in theory it could be driven. Our client gave us all the trim, chrome, bumpers, glass, dash, interior, etc. to finish-so we have been busy this Winter.
This car came to us with a nice paint job; when will painters realize one must fit the doors, bonnet, boot lid & bumpers ON TO THE CAR, PRIOR TO PAINT!? Anytime this is done after paint, one can almost guarantee chips & scratches will appear along those edges. Even the simplest pieces of trim should be fit before any painting; thus allowing the necessary adjustments that will be needed. FYI, all gaps, lines & alignment should be done PRIOR to fitting of weather stripping. One must be very careful with the door alignment without weather strip, as to not close the doors too far on the latch and cause chips. OOPS never mind, you’re making these adjustments pre paint, RIGHT? I know this sounds tedious & it is, but let’s imagine how much complaining the painter will produce once he sees the damages. What is the lesser of two evils? Especially-the E-type’s front & rear bumpers are extremely difficult to fit, due to those body areas being the most prone to panel straightening. Add to this, perhaps the bumpers have been straightened/re-plated, minor misalignment will now occur. So, remember your Geometry class: You know, the part where the Isosceles triangle is one dimension at one point and incrementally increases towards another point. (I think!) Sorry Mr.Granlan! So, those minor misalignments will vex you when you try to assemble bumpers, guards & motif bars onto the vehicle. Not to mention that thin, long strips of bumper seal that is actually supposed to make contact with the body & finish a “nice line”. No wonder the painters don’t fit the bumpers first! I wonder why?
Perhaps they know better.

WHEN JAGUAR HUNTERS MOVE IN FOR THE KILL

This is a story of ugly speculation. It starts with this Jaguar XK 120 Roadster that was offered for sale in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for approximately $13,000 around the end of October 2010. As can be seen from the ORIGINAL AD it was a pile of rusted out metal that was originally in an open field. Not only was this car clearly missing major parts but above all,  it was a non matching numbers car**.  At a later date it was moved indoors where we had a chance to see it and take a few pictures of it.
**A non matching numbers car is one that does not have either the original engine or the original gearbox. In other words non original components.
XK 120 CHASSIS # 674049 in a FIELD

XK 120 CHASSIS # 674049 INDOORS
So where is the car now? The car in exactly the same condition as shown above is now resting in a fancy showroom in Germany with the initial asking price of 32.700 EUR or approx. $43,000 (Recent price drop to 28,900 EUR as of April 20/2011). A 200% net profit from the asking price in October 2010 when it was in Toronto.  In addition the German ad claims that the car spent 30 Years of its life indoors in a Garage. SEE FULL DETAILS HERE of this XK 120 Roadster now being offered for sale in Germany. BUYER BEWARE!

Buckminster Fuller's Amazing 1933 Dymaxion Car

I first read about the Dymaxion in this recent and interesting NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE. I was so fascinated by it that I decided to write a Blog post on it using the original patent, the WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE and the video from the Ford Museum below. What an amazing invention! What a genius inventor. Fuller was without doubt years ahead of his time.

E-TYPE Ding-Dong this is your Avon lady calling

Pretty hard to believe but there really was an Avon after-shave in a British Racing Green bottle that was in the shape of a E-Type. Coming from Avon it must have smelled like dogie poo. It was called "Deep Woods After Shave". On a related note Jaguar Cars have lent their name and logo to a MENS FRAGRANCE. I wonder what other marketing gimmick they will come up with. Definitely worth collecting and who knows maybe in another 50 years it will be worth mega $$$$$$$

Jaguar project at home

See Papito Paul's BLOG
I took off the transmission tunnel to access the odometer and reverse lamp switch.

Fabricated a bracket to holding the hall effect transducer for the speedometer.

Solution for mounting the wire wheels.
A piece of pipe, tapped for the wheel studs to be used as a guide for installing the wheels.
Without it, it is a real pain to line up the holes with the studs. This makes it a piece of cake.

Slide the wheel over the pipe, install 4 of the five lug nuts, then remove the pipe and install the last stud. Put the other 3 wheels on. Done.

Jaguar Wednesday did not get too much done. Picked up some parts from Imagination Engineering they had ordered for me from XKS unlimited. Needed some wire, so Richard sent me to Skycraft Surplus and too much time checking it out. I got the wire at a very good price.
